Crews begin digging tunnel under Willamette River

By Michael Bamesberger, The Oregonian

In the news...

Ever wonder what it takes to install a water pipeline under the Willamette River?

A powerful pressured hammer, a steerable underground drill and months of work, at the very least.

Next week, construction crews will begin drilling under the riverbed as part of a massive update to Lake Oswego and Tigard's water systems.

West Linn Pipeline Construction Update: Horizontal Directional Drilling site (end of Mapleton Dr.)

Pipe casing installation starting tomorrow – noisy activity

The pipe casing work is expected to begin tomorrow at the HDD site, just north of Mary S. Young Park. The 60-inch steel casing will be installed using a large pressurized hammer, through softer soils to reach solid ground (about 200 feet). The casing provides protection for the pipe to be tunneled under the river.

During the pipe casing hammering (known as pipe ramming), it will be very noisy for approximately 1 - 3 hour periods during work hours, depending on conditions. Work hours are 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Depending on locations and terrain, neighbors may hear noise during the casing hammering. The contractor will aim to start the noisiest work after 9am through mid-afternoon. Following each hammering period, there will be a few hours of cleaning and welding, which is not as noisy. The hammering schedule will vary depending on progress and conditions – it could take place a few times a day, or occur every 1-2 days. This work is expected to take about two weeks to complete, depending on ground conditions. Immediate neighbors to the site may experience some vibration during the casing installation. No work will take place on the Fourth of July weekend.
