Gladstone Pipeline & River Intake Construction Update

Concrete is pumped into the forms at the 67' level of the RIPS.

This update includes construction work in the following areas. Scroll down for specific information on each location:

  • River intake pump station (RIPS) on the Clackamas River
  • Pipelines east of McLoughlin Blvd. (W. Clackamas Blvd., Bellevue Ave. and W. Exeter St.)
  • Pipelines in Meldrum Bar Park (horizontal directional drilling under the river)
  • Micro-tunneled pipeline under McLoughlin Blvd. and River Road
  • City of Gladstone to close Meldrum Bar boat ramp and parking area on June 25

River Intake Pump Station (RIPS)

The downstream portion of the 67 foot level concrete pour was completed this week, bringing the level of the river intake pump station above the entryway height. The upstream portion of this level will be formed this week and poured next week, followed by forming the interior walls. The first pour of the permanent access bridge also occurred this week. Bridge girders are scheduled to arrive on June 23 and will be installed later that week.

Noisy activity! Some of the steel sheets from the cofferdam will be removed next week. This work should last about two days, starting mid-week. A smaller vibratory device will be used to remove the sheets than the one that was used to install them. Neighbors may notice an increase in noise and vibration during this work, depending on locations.

Pipeline on W. Clackamas Blvd., Bellevue Ave. and W. Exeter St. – survey work beginning

On Monday, survey work and exploratory digging in the roadway to locate underground utilities and pipes begins. Work hours will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. There may be some single lane closures with flaggers during work hours.

Pipelines in Meldrum Bar Park and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) – casing installation to begin tomorrow

The HDD easement/staging area now has erosion control and security fencing. The work pad area should be finished by tomorrow. The staging area along Meldrum Bar Park Rd. also has security and erosion control fencing and equipment and materials are arriving at the site.

Drilling work is expected to begin from tomorrow, including installing a 400 foot pipe casing prior to drilling the tunnel under the river. During casing installation, it will be very noisy for approximately ½ hour periods between 9 a.m. and mid-afternoon, depending on neighbor locations. Following each ½ hour period, there will be a couple of hours of welding, which is not as noisy. This work is expected to take about 2 weeks to complete. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, and some Saturdays.

Micro-tunneled pipeline under McLoughlin Blvd. and River Rd. – postponed

The last report indicated that the entry shaft for the micro-tunneled pipeline would be excavated in early to mid-July. The entry shaft will be located on the pedestrian path on Jensen Road near River Rd. This work may be delayed until late summer or early fall, when the tunneling machine becomes available.

City of Gladstone closing Meldrum Bar Park Rd. past Dahl Rd. on June 25

Gladstone Public Works will need to remove several hazardous cottonwood trees near the boat ramp parking area on June 25. They will close the boat ramp on that day. For more information, contact the City of Gladstone at 503-656-5225.

Neighbors may notice an increase in noise and truck traffic during construction. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. At times there may be some work occurring on Saturdays.

We apologize for any inconvenience work may cause and thank you for your patience as construction progresses.
