West Linn Pipeline Construction Update: Horizontal Directional Drilling site (end of Mapleton Dr.)

60" steel pipe casing like this will be installed using a large pressurized hammer

Mobilization at the HDD site, just north of Mary S. Young Park

This week, crews started surveying and clearing the HDD site at the end of Mapleton Drive, mobilizing equipment and installing fencing. This will continue over the next week, including placing rock and sound barriers at the site. Neighbors may notice an increase in truck traffic on Mapleton Drive as equipment arrives to the site.
Early next week, the contractor will begin excavating and building a work area at the HDD site. Once the work area is complete, the pipe casing will be installed.

Pipe casing installation – noisy activity

Beginning from Wednesday, June 18, a 60 inch steel pipe casing will be installed at the HDD site, prior to drilling the tunnel. The casing will be installed using a large pressurized hammer, through softer soils to reach solid ground. The casing provides protection for the pipe to be tunneled under the river.

During the pipe casing hammering (known as pipe ramming), it will be very noisy for approximately ½ hour periods between 9 a.m. and mid-afternoon. Following each 1/2 hour period, there will be a couple of hours of welding, which is not as noisy. Immediate neighbors may experience some vibration during the casing installation. This work is expected to take about two weeks to complete. Work hours are 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Casing installation is also expected to begin on the Gladstone HDD site in Meldrum Bar Park from tomorrow. Neighbors located along the river in West Linn may hear noise during this activity, which should take about 2 weeks to complete. Work hours in Gladstone for the HDD are 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday to Friday. Visit the Gladstone page for more information on construction activities in Gladstone.

About 25 neighbors attended the Meet the Willamette River Crossing and Mapleton Drive Contractor meeting. The contractor, Frank Coluccio Construction Co., described the construction approach and answered questions. You can read the meeting summary and Q/A on the past meetings page.
