Horizontal directional drilling under the river, near Mary S. Young Park

This week, crews completed the third and final “pass” of upsizing the hole to 54.” The hole is now large enough for the pipe to be pulled through!

Steel pipe is currently being welded into 240-foot lengths, and will arrive mid-month at Meldrum Bar Park on a large barge, to prepare for the “pullback” phase. Crews will then assemble the 240-foot lengths to form one, large 3,800-foot stretch of pipe.

“Pullback” of the pipe is now estimated to occur in late-October, and could take two to three days. A drill rig will pull the pipe through the hole under the river, from Meldrum Bar Park to Mary S. Young Park. During this phase, operations must occur round-the-clock, in a continuous fashion, to ensure the hole remains open. Neighbors will be notified in advance of this work.

Over the next few weeks, there will be minimal activity at the West Linn HDD site as the drilling crew waits for the pipe to be assembled for pullback.

Highway 43 pipeline construction (night work) – starts next month

Crews are expected to begin laying pipe on Hwy. 43 near Laurel St. in Lake Oswego, in early November. This crew will progress south towards West Linn. A second, northbound crew is expected to begin pipeline construction in mid-November on Hwy. 43 near Mapleton Drive in West Linn, working north toward Lake Oswego. Schedules are subject to change.

All work on Hwy. 43 will occur during weeknights between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. In most areas on Hwy. 43, two way traffic will be maintained during construction hours. All travel lanes of traffic will be open during the day.

Neighborhood Construction Meetings – first and third Tuesdays of the month
