Gladstone Pipeline and River Intake Construction Update
This update includes construction work in the following areas.
- River Intake Pump Station (RIPS)
- Gladstone pipeline work
- Microtunneling under McLoughlin Blvd.
- Meldrum Bar Park pipeline work
River Intake Pump Station (RIPS)
Wall panels are almost complete and glass is being installed for the doors and windows. Plumbing and electrical work also continues within the site and new structure. Work will now begin on installing the new roof! The large fish screens have arrived on site and will be installed over the next few weeks. The new fish screens, along with the recently completed river channelization, will make this river intake much more “fish friendly” than the existing intake.
Gladstone pipeline work
Last week, work began at the intersection of Portland Avenue and W. Clackamas Boulevard to install a pipeline crossing and connect to the new intake. This work involves a large excavation at the intersection, and Portland Avenue between Arlington Street to W. Clackamas Boulevard is closed to through traffic while this work is occurring. Access to the river intake work site will be maintained. The crossing work is expected to be complete by Thanksgiving. Please watch for signage directing you safely around all pipeline work as there is no pedestrian or bike access during construction.
Some key information about construction:
- Traffic detours and temporary closures will be in place, usually one block at a time
- Equipment and material (e.g., gravel, pipe, etc.) will be stored and parked in the right-of-way
- No on-street parking in the one block closure zone during construction
- Truck traffic and construction noise during construction
Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Microtunneled pipeline under McLoughlin Blvd. - will resume in January
Work on the pipeline to be microtunneled under River Road and McLoughlin Blvd. will resume in January.
Meldrum Bar Park pipeline work - horizontal directional drilling site and exploratory digging along Meldrum Bar Park Road
Now that the HDD pipe has been successfully installed under the river, the drilling equipment has been removed from the site. The newly installed pipe has been cut, capped and buried. In December, some of the site blocks and support that was installed prior to construction will be removed. For safety, the site will remain fenced over the next few months.
Beginning in late November, prior to Thanksgiving, crews will be digging exploratory holes in the roadway to ensure the pipeline has no conflicts with existing utilities or services. The work will occur in Meldrum Bar Park, between the drilling site near the boat ramp and along Meldrum Bar Park Road near the contractor equipment storage and staging area. Work hours will be7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. There may be some single lane closures with flaggers during work hours.
