River Intake Pump Station (RIPS) - stone veneer complete, pumps are running

Earlier this week, the large red crane was removed from the site. Crews are now finished placing the architectural stone veneer as part of the entrance gate (pictured right). The protective coating will be applied when weather permits.

With the three-month commissioning period now underway for the new pumps, construction activities are fairly quiet at the site.

In summer, the existing intake will be demolished. Once this is complete, the area will be landscaped.

Microtunnel at Jensen Road pathway – tunneling is underway

The tunnel boring machine has started boring and installing the 60 in. pipe casing. To date, almost 200 ft. (one third of the tunnel) has been installed under River Road! The tunnel will continue under McLoughlin Boulevard, working east to Exeter Street. This is expected to continue over the next month.

Large storage tanks to help separate the dirt and materials removed during microtunneling are set up at the site and along the side of River Road, near Jensen Road. Work hours are 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, and Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

To maintain safety, there is a single lane closure on River Road at the Jensen Road pathway during the microtunnel work. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained. The Jensen Road pathway is also closed to pedestrians during construction. Please use Meldrum Bar Park Road to access the park.

Neighbors can expect to see and hear excavators, a hydraulic crane, trucks, a separation tank for the materials removal and generators. During construction, there may also be an increase in noise, truck traffic and vibration depending on neighbors’ locations.

Meldrum Bar Park pipeline work - paving work has commenced

Crews have now installed pipe through the ballfield parking lot, to the corner of Jensen Road. Paving has commenced in the parking lot and will be completed soon along portions of Meldrum Bar Park Road, weather permitting. This work will be done at night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Once the microtunnel work is complete, the remainder of the pipe on Jensen Road pathway will be installed. To accommodate equipment and maintain safety during construction and paving, the ballfield parking lot is temporarily closed.

Access to the park and boat ramp remains open during regular park hours. Please watch for flaggers in the work areas—single lane closures are in place during construction in the park. Neighbors and park users can expect to see and hear excavators, loaders, pipe, steel plates, gravel and dump trucks.

W. Exeter Street – pipe installation in progress

Crews have resumed installing pipe on W. Exeter Street, near Bellevue Avenue (pictured above). W. Exeter Street, between Bellevue and Beatrice Avenues is closed to through traffic during work hours. Equipment and material is stored and parked in the right-of-way along Exeter Street.

Key information:

  • During work hours, there will be no on-street parking in the one-block closure zone.
  • For safety, residents located in the closed work zone who usually park along the street during the day will need to park elsewhere on side streets.
  • Neighbors may notice an increase in noise and truck traffic during construction.
