Bonita Road Pipeline
Crews recently completed the process of tunneling under I-5 and installed the pipeline from the area near Paul Schatz Furniture Store in Tigard, to the area near Ethan Allen in Lake Oswego, off Bangy Road. The contractor is currently backfilling the space between the new pipe and the pipe casing, and is expected to be done next week. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Next week, crews will begin excavating a second shaft in the center lane of Bonita Road near 74th Avenue. This shaft will be used to tunnel the pipeline underneath the railroad tracks using an auger bore. The shaft will be present 24 hours a day, seven days a week for about two months. While it is in place, there will be no left turns permitted from 74th Avenue onto Bonita Road. Two-way traffic will be maintained, however, and traffic control devices will direct vehicles around the site. This area will also house a large crane and excavator. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
From 8 p.m. on Friday, May 29 until Monday, May 31 at 5 a.m., Bonita Road will be closed between 72nd Avenue and Sequoia Parkway to allow crews to install the pipeline through the intersection. There are numerous utilities under 72nd Avenue that must be crossed during pipeline construction and it’s beneficial to have one continuous open trench through this section. Completing the crossing in one weekend will also minimize the impacts to commuter traffic. A detour will be in place, and southbound traffic from 72nd Avenue will be permitted to turn right onto Bonita Road and northbound traffic will be permitted to turn left.
Night work on the Bonita Road pipeline continues next week. Crews will install pipe just past 72nd Avenue to the staging area at Sequoia Parkway. Work hours are 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Crews are expecting to install about 50 feet of pipe each night. As they install the pipeline, the road will be temporarily patched. Final paving will occur after the pipe is pressure tested and disinfected, likely in early fall 2015.
Crews have poured new curbs and ADA ramps on Milton Court, and, on May 18 and 19, will conduct a final paving of Milton Court from the pump station and across the intersection of Bonita Road and Milton Court. To minimize impacts to traffic and businesses, this work will be done at night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Crews will first grind a portion of the existing asphalt and temporary paving, and then place a full-width of new asphalt. This work is weather dependent.
Crews grade Milton Court in preparation for the final paving next week.
During the paving on Milton Court, one lane of traffic will be open with flaggers in place to direct traffic around the work site. While crews are working in Bonita Road, single-lane closures will be in effect, depending on their location in the road. Signs and cones will also be present in the roadway. The remainder of Bonita Road will receive a final paving after pipeline construction is complete, and the pipes have been tested and chlorinated.
About Bonita Pump Station
The Bonita Pump Station will connect with several local water systems including Lake Oswego, Portland and Washington County. This supply collaboration will keep Tigard protected should one water supply become interrupted. Completion is expected in fall 2015.
