Mapleton Drive pipeline construction starts next week
Crews have begun activities at the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) staging area (near Mary S. Young Park) to prepare for major pipe installation on Mapleton Drive. By mid-June, the remaining pieces of pipe will be installed at the site, the sound wall will be removed and the site restored.
Construction work to begin next week on Mapleton Drive
Starting Tuesday, May 26, crews expect to begin preparing a work pit (entry shaft) for the tunnel (auger bore) to be installed under Trillium Creek. An auger will be used to install piles and steel sheets to support the work pit, located on the road and gravel shoulder on Mapleton Drive, near the creek. The work pit will be excavated and the materials removed. In June, an auger bore machine will be placed inside the work pit to create a tunnel under Trillium Creek.
Later in June, crews expect to relocate a sanitary sewer near 4022 Mapleton Drive.
During the tunnel (auger bore) work and sewer relocation, there will be a single-lane closure with flaggers. Please expect some short-term temporary delays to get through the work zone.
Over the next few weeks, crews will also trim tree branches overhanging into the right-of-way and remove a few trees located in the right-of-way on Mapleton Drive as a safety precaution.
Equipment and materials will be stored in the right-of-way on Mapleton Drive at a small area designated on the south side of the Water Treatment Plant and private property at the western end of Mapleton Drive.
Neighbors can expect to see and hear a drill rig with an auger (at Trillium Creek), excavators, generators, loaders, saw-cutters, compressors, pipe, steel plates, gravel and dump trucks in the work area and right-of-way. During work hours, there may be an increase in noise, truck traffic and vibration, depending on neighbors' locations. Work hours are 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturdays. No work will take place on public holidays.
Road closure expected in July
Once the auger bore is installed under Trillium Creek and the sanitary sewer is relocated, crews will begin installing the large diameter water pipe in the roadway starting at the eastern end of Mapleton Drive, working toward Nixon Avenue. This is expected to begin in July, however, schedules are subject to change. Once crews work past the Nixon Avenue and Mapleton Drive intersection, a detour will be in place during work hours.
Questions about pipeline construction on Mapleton Drive? Check out these helpful guidelines that were developed in collaboration with a taskforce of neighbors, City of West Linn councilors and staff, TVF&R, Partnership staff and contractor representatives. The guidelines also include a map of the detour route that will be in place sometime this summer.
A “meet the Mapleton Drive pipeline contractor” session was held on May 19 at the Robinwood Station. About 25 people attended the meeting. A summary of questions and answers will be posted shortly.
The neighborhood construction meetings will continue to be held twice a month.
- The first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 a.m., at Burgerville, 18350 Willamette Drive, West Linn.
- The third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m., at the Robinwood Station, 3706 Cedar Oak Drive, West Linn.
The next meeting will be June 2 at 7:30 a.m. in the downstairs area at Burgerville. Please attend to stay updated on construction progress in West Linn and ask the project team questions.
