Crews begin tunneling under the railroad tracks on Bonita Road
Special Bonita Road Pipeline Construction Update
Tonight, starting at 8 p.m., crews will kick-off major construction activities for the auger bore under the railroad tracks on Bonita Road at 74th Avenue. They will begin by placing concrete barricades around the center lane of Bonita Road to guide traffic safely around the construction site. They will also start excavating a shaft, which will be used to tunnel the new water pipeline underneath the railroad tracks. The work site will be present 24 hours a day, seven days a week for about two months. While it is in place, there will be no left turns permitted from 74th Avenue onto Bonita Road. Work will end by 5 a.m., however, crews will stay on tomorrow to hold “SLOW” signs and monitor traffic to ensure there are no issues for vehicles driving around the work site.
The work site and concrete barricades will create a modified traffic pattern pushing eastbound traffic out slightly onto 74th Avenue. Preparations were already made by the contractor to allow for this change. The curb and sidewalks were removed at the intersection of Bonita Road and 74th to create additional space in the lane. These will be restored after pipeline installation is complete. Another noticeable change is the work area will house a large crane, excavator and other equipment 24 hours a day, which will be visible to the travelling public. They will only be in operation between 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Friday, and will remain stationary during the other hours of the day.
